Poi is highly addictive! Once ya start spinnin', ya don't wanna stop! Kenna's teaching style is very easy to understand. And along with being a most fabulous belly dancer, she also performs with double sword, fire staff, torches, poi, fire fans, fire palms, fire fingers and hula hoop.

Belly Dance is let out of the box! In this workshop, *BoomBahnique Slink-Pop,* we will work with a method of movement transition to naturally allow flow through our body. I. New Saturday classes

I am so excited to announce that I am going to start offering Saturday classes! I have had so many students with Wednesday night scheduling conflicts that it seems like the right time to offer something new. Here are the details -

Tribal Basics Level One - Saturday, 11 AM - 12 PM, starts March 29

This introductory level class uses full-body warm-ups, Tribal Fusion muscle training, and Improvisational Tribal drills to help you develop an understanding of Tribal Style Bellydance.

Beginner Poi - Saturday, 12 PM - 1 PM, starts March 29

Pacific Island-style poi swinging has been incorporated into everything from performance to ritual to raves. Learn the basics of swinging poi in this easy to follow class. Note: I will bring all the poi I have, but I can't guarantee equipment for the whole class. If you're thinking about coming, please contact me so I can tell you what supplies you might need.

Both classes will be offered in a four-week session starting March 29 and ending April 26, with no classes on April 19. You can pre-pay for a four-week session for $45, or drop in for $15 a class. As always, if you're currently taking classes with me, you can drop-in to any level you've completed for more practice for $5 a class.

Current Wednesday classes will continue as scheduled.

II. Upcoming Shows

March 22 - Tonight! Assumed Identity Benefit at East Village, 10 PM. Sacred Shimmy will be performing with an incredible line-up of Columbus talent. We will be debuting a new drum duet, a new song by Sai Baba Musical Kaleidoscope (Zach's electronic music project), and a new choreography. You can't beat that!

April 5 - Beledi Extravaganza in Saint Mary's, OH. More details available at ohioarts.org under "Beledi Extravanza."

III. Comfest Performance Opportunities

One of Sacred Shimmy's favorite performance spots all year is the Community Festival in Goodale Park during the last weekend in June. This year I will be putting together a beginner-level choreography for any students interested in dancing with Sacred Shimmy on stage. Rehearsals will run on Wednesday nights at 8 PM from May 7 - June 25, and will be priced as regular classes. If you can plan to attend a minimum of 6 of these 8 rehearsals, you're welcome to participate! Clear your calendars now, and I'll shoot you more details as the process unfolds.

Hi everyone,

I'm Erika, and I'm Level 2 certified in the Suhaila Salimpour Format, and Suhaila herself has given me her blessing and permission to teach her Level 1 and 2 technique here in the NE Ohio area.

My next session begins on Wednesday, April 16, 2008. I hold my class at the Noreen Londregan School of Dance in Mayfield Village from 7:30 pm to 9:00 pm. Address is: 750 Beta Drive, Suite D, Mayfield Village, OH 44143 (just East of I-271 off of Wilson Mills Blvd. exit).

I also still have 4 more classes left in this session, and you should feel free to drop in for any of these remaining classes of this session at a tuition of $15 per class.

Belly Dance Technique – Levels 1 & 2
As developed by world-renowned dancer, Suhaila Salimpour*
Emphasis on isolating, strengthening & conditioning of muscles utilized to execute movement. Drills and exercises to develop stamina and core strength, as well as control.
Classes are suitable for dancers with all levels of experience and are a great, all-over workout! No experience is necessary - feel free to “drop in” at any point during the session.

April 16th, 23rd, 30th / May 7th, 14th, 21st
6 Week Session - Wednesday evenings
7:30 pm – 9:00 pm
(please try to arrive 10-15 minutes prior to the start of class to sign-in)

What to Wear/Bring to Class:
Dance, yoga or other loose fitting pants, leotards or tights (no skirts, please), sports bra, tank or halter top, t-shirt, bare feet or dance paws. A light hip scarf may be worn (no beads or coins, please). You may prefer to bring a Yoga or Pilates mat for the warm-up portion of class. Be prepared to sweat! A towel and water are highly recommended!

Let Zafira share some of their secrets of choreography creation. This workshop works on stage presence, posture, working with other dancers, and shows how to make even a simple choreography dynamic. Also, We will work in pairs/small groups to learn a short choreography.

Leaving Tribe - cross posted

For personal reasons, I'm leaving Tribe.net. While here, I connected with many wonderful people I've come to call friends, both close and just acquaintence. Thank you for your support and compassion since we met, most especially over the last year. I believe the bellydance phase of my performance life is over and I now look forward to a life in academia and whatever is beyond the horizon. Please keep my email on hand - amadearose32 @ aol.com. I used to take classes with Kathleen at Kent State, and I am looking for a bunch of ladies in the Ashland/Mansfield area who might like to just meet up and dance or who have a troupe forming who might like to add another. There is a class that meets at the Mansfield Y, but it is for beginners and I'd need something a bit more advanced than that.

Tribal Night 6

Anna and I have in the works Tribal Night 6. The High Five Bar (the same establishment that has hosted all previous TNs) has asked Raks Jahanni to organize another one just like the last one. Then I thought “just like the last one”? What made the last one so special??? Then it hit me…I think it was the dancers that stayed after the show they remember the most. Good times…

Anyway, Anna and I said “sure, why not?”, and the bar says “ok, you have October 20”. Moments later we secured a more than eager local band who heard the words belly and dancers and agreed to play after the show and beat their chests. I think the newly single drummer was the one that spoke up first. They’re not the usual type of band you would see at a belly dancing event, but then again Anna and I aren’t “usual” either. The band rocks my socks off and that’s all that matters.

So here’s the thing…we can’t have a Tribal Night if we don’t have any dancers that want to perform, right? We would like as many people to get back to us within A DAY to tell us if they would like to perform or we won’t have it…seriously! Again, the date is Oct. 20 (a Saturday), and everyone is welcome. You best believe this will be a Halloween themed dance night…we can’t let slide by the one time of year when Anna feels normal, can we??? Feel free to come whacked out in your most disturbing ensemble. Our special friends in dance (Zimra, Chandara Gamal (and troupe), Kira LaFave, Yasmilah, Zahira, Sacred Shimmy, Rachyl, Gypsy Soul, Laylia, Khalida Tribe, Crescent Moon) who have supported us in the past are always welcome to perform. Hit me back if you’re down….

The Ka-tet (Earth Guardian Base Camp): We are a group of friends brought together to create a camp of fun and openess. We will have a participation dome with games tounaments during the day and projection art at night. It will be very interactive and will even have times for other people to present their art.

The Laser Dome: In a nut shell our camp is a psychodelic laser experiance contained within a 42' diameter 5/8 geodesic dome, with a 18x20 tent enterance. Inside the dome is a 7000 watt sound system, with 8 medium powered red & green lasers, and other intelligent lighting. Our dj's provide a healthy mix of trance, house, breaks, and hip-hop. Also every day at dusk we project psychodelic movies inside the dome during what we call Cryptik Theater.

Hum 'n Hug North: Wander into our realm where a gazillion musical instruments are everywhere waiting to be picked up and played, waiting to have strains of music of many sorts coaxed out of them. Jamming. Consorting. Communing. Fun. Come play - come jam - come hug! Originally started at Transformus, the Southeast Regional Burn, the Ohio contingent of the group looks forward to being a part of Scorched Nuts!

Camp Happy Hour: It's always Happy Hour with us! We provide concoctions of all varietys to quench your thirst. We have a comfy chill space, a little bit of lawn art, and tons of fun!

Tribal Belly Dance Camp: Fun, Funky & Powerful tribal belly dancing. Including workshops and performances!

Blinky Blinky Blinky: I've done a bunch of art on the Playa, The L2K ring, the L3K ring last year, and the hypknowtrons. I'll bring the hypknowtrons and set up some very nice blinky art.

Camp Pornyata: An adult themed camp bringing gifts of spanking open pornyata's to recieve adult toys, gifts ect. 18 and over only.

Radical Faerie Camp: We are a mixed gender queer group of folks that would love to create queer safe space at the gathering.

Tribal Discourse

Ok, I read this post on another tribe that will remain nameless haha. If you've read it you know what I mean.
They really dogged tribal dancers and were rather mean about it.
Part of the emphasis was about how ATS is turning into an anything goes format. Do you think this is true? And if so should ATS style be strictly limited to the teachings of Carolena? Or should it evolve? If it evolves should every little offshoot be given a new name? And did not each and every dance for begin somewhere? with someone? and has not every single dance form (belly dance) evolved from something, isn't it still evolving? Do cabaret dancers EVER perform new moves or combos? To put down tribal dancers for trying new things, creating new methods of working together is pretty much in essence putting themselves down as I seriously doubt any belly dancer today ONLY performs moves and combinations done by the originator of the dance.

Aren't there actually a few broad categories of belly dance. Such as Tribal and Cabaret. There are more yes........And that anything tribal still falls under the tribal category. Part of the issue was that some cab dancers were sick of the word tribal, tribal fusion, urban tribal yada yada..... Anybody wearing dreads and tassels called themselves tribal.

Hmmmmmmmmmm does anybody wearing beads and bedlehs call themselves cabaret? despite being turkish, egyptian, modern pop, or otherwise??? Is cabaret not a broad all emcompassing term as well? I kinda think it is. I'm not disparaging towards it, it just is as it is.

So do we really need 50 thousand little categorized names to describe each and every variation of our dance form?

Just curious.

Friday October 27th, Raks Jahanni will be hosting Tribal Night 4, with a raqin' Halloween theme. The show will be from 9pm-midnight, and featuring all kinds of bellydancers from all kinds of disciplines - Tribal Fusion, ATS, Raqs Sharki, Cabaret, etc. etc. - All with a Halloween flair ;-)
We're hoping to be choc a bloc full of dancers, so if you're in town that night and want to dance, let us know. We'd love to have you.
This is not a tribal only event - all b-dancers are welcome, as long as you're up to bein' a lil halloweenish.

Hello Ladies of the Tribal Realm!!

Tribal Night 2 was grrreat! If you were there you saw the debut of the all male Bellydance review. If you weren’t, you missed a great show!

Tribal Night 3 will be held on Saturday September 30th from 9-midnight.Venue: High Five Bar (http://www.highfivebar.com) in the Short North district of Columbus, Ohio. If you would like to dance, help organize, publicize, or participate in any other way, let me know.

Like many of you, we are trying to keep our infant Tribal community afloat in Ohio. This event is a fun ole partay that showcases Tribal Bellydance in a more public venue, where you can get your groove on then chill with friends and have a drink. Even if you ain’t got no tribal training but want to give the style a go, give me a holla!

Ashtabula County Bellydancers!

Hi there! :) The Wellness & Total Learning Center in Ashtabula, Ohio has in the past offered Bellydance Classes - and have since stopped do to lack of participants to take the class. I live here in Ashtabula, and am trying to get them started back up! I have left my information with them, and encourage others in the area interested to do the same so hopefully they will again hold the class! They need a minimum of 6! I'm a stay at home Mother of two just itching to take a class - and hoping that I won't have to go out of town to do it! Help me out! :) Thanks!

Dancers around Youngstown?

Hi. I live in the virtual bellydance void that is Youngstown, Ohio. I have been bellydancing for 25 years, but it has been pretty much on my own, at Pennsic War and other events, a few haflas, and several classes and seminars I have taken and taught. I have friends who come over to dance, but that's about it. I need more! I want to find venues for dancing that are out of the classroom, and that is eerily absent from my area.

I also do fire poi, and have a good sized yard to do it in. I am always willing to learn and teach new stuff to new people. You can never have enough tricks to blow yourself up with.

I am looking for more dancers in and around my area to get together with who have the same problems. We gather at my house every weekend, or travelling short distances is also possible. My husband is a gourmet cook, so there's always good food. If you need someone to dance/burn with too, send me a message.

(Hafla is open to all dancers from the Intensive who'd like to dance. Please indicate your desire to dance at the Hafla along with your registration. Performances are limited to 5 minutes. Please have your music available on cd. We also plan to have live music for open dancing. )

We are now ready to begin registration for Rachel Brice's Intensive in June. Rachel will be with us for 5 days of intensive yoga and dance drills. Among some of the material that will be covered during the intensive are the following subjects: Introduction to Tribal Fusion Choreography, Constructing a Personal Practice, Yoga for Upper Body Strength and Flexibility, Leading with the Chest, Locks and Isolations, A Practice for Excruciatingly Slow Dancing, and Yoga for Backbends and Floorwork.
Rachel also likes to cater to those dancers attending the workshop and is open to taking requests during the intensive.

A typical day during the intensive would run as follows:
10:00 am- 2:30pm Yoga stretch and belly dance conditioning drills followed by:

Focused topic on tribal belly dance technique and/or combinations

Workshop Topics Detail-

Rachel Brice will teach 25 hours of challenging and rigorous tribal belly dance. Participants will learn to develop a daily tribal dance practice, while mastering techniques for stage presence and performance. Prepare to sweat!

Introduction to Tribal Fusion Choreography:
Choreographies are made up of sections, as are musical pieces. In this workshop, the participant will learn a technique for structuring a choreography, and will be given ideas for thematic development and abstract musical interpretation. Participants will create their own combinations to be used with combinations/sections taught in class.

Emphasizing Posture
Assured posture, powerful arms and isolated hip work are three key elements of a strong performance. In this class, we will begin and end with Yoga Asanas that open the chest, strengthen the upper back, create flexibility in the shoulders, and we will work on isolations and posture while practicing drills.

Constructing a Personal Practice
A guide to help dancers construct a personal practice, incorporating drills and stretches to access the muscles used for Bellydance. Principles of alignment and assessing your practice will be discussed. Please bring a new notebook that will become your practice journal.

A Practice for Excruciatingly Slow Dancing
In this workshop we will cover the basics for dancing slowly, including developing consciousness in the muscles required for isolations. The emphasis will be on developing flexibility and stamina. Please bring a notebook.

Leading with the Chest
This fast-paced workshop will include drills for high-energy dancing with a focus on posture.

Yoga for Backbends and Floorwork
Flexibility and strength are required to safely execute the infamous full layback, and these can be acquired by a consisitent, well thought-out practice. Participants will work on their own practice, and later, in pairs to learn how to guide themselves and others into safe floorwork.

For all workshops:

You will need: Comfortable stretchy pants, a form-fitting tank top or sports bra, and a warm tee shirt or sweatshirt. If you wish, bring a hip scarf and skirt for the dance portion of class. Bring water, you may sweat a lot. Handouts will be provided. For specified workshops, you may need a notebook or a Yoga mat, check workshop descriptions for details.

If you would like to prepare for the material to be covered in class, Rachel recommends purchasing and/or borrowing any of the following: Tribal Fusion: Yoga Isolations and Drills, The Fat Chance Series, Suhaila's new series, and Erich Schiffmann/Ali MacGraw's Yoga Mind and Body.

Mira Betz- Mira Betz received her B.F.A. from the California Collage of Arts and
Crafts. Active in theater and the performing arts for 18 years and a
life-long dancer, Mira began her training in Middle Eastern dance in her
early teens. As a founding member, choreographer, and solo performer of
Aywah! Ethnic Dance Company for 10 years, she developed a solid foundation
of contemporary, traditional, as well as ritualistic dance forms.
In spring 2006 she has been in a fruitful collaboration with the talented
Elizabeth Strong, choreographing for Jill Parker and her company Ultra
Gypsy. They are all now launching the "Barbary Coast Shakedown" a touring
seminar coupling performance with intensive dance intruction. Mira has
had the pleasure of performing at such infamous venues as the Hollywood
Bowl in LA, The Fillmore in San Francisco, The Knitting Factory in NYC
and many more. Her dance background includes training in Salsa, Modern,
Jazz, and Flamenco.

1) Friday evening, June 2nd from 7-9pm- Moroccan Schikhatt -A Dance for Women by Women

The Moroccan Schikhatt is a village dance of the berbers of
Morocco.Emerging out of the seemingly restrictive segregation of society
keeping women and men seperate, this is a dance of celebration, joy, knowlegde and sex
education. In this workshop we will learn big easy movements, rhythm, a
song, and emphasize sisterhood. This dance is about having fun, not being
perfect; letting go and enjoying music. No previous dance experience
necessary, just a willingness to liberate.

2) Saturday afternoon, June 3rd, 3-4:30pm- The Art of Professional Performance

This innovative workshop is open to dancers of all levels and backgrounds.
After hours of preparation in classes, practice in front of the mirror,
and rehearsal you are ready to get out there and perform, or you have been
out there for a while and want to bump up your game. This workshop offers
the tools both practical and theoretical to break into or enhance your
professional appearance and stage presence. It will provide insight into
job seeking, costumery, make-up tips, promotional packages, as well as
explore the illusive notions of stage presence, charisma, handling the
audience and much more. Bring any promotional material you have on
yourself, dance photos, your make-up, comfortable clothes for movement and
an open mind.

Liz Strong- Elizabeth Strong believes that the heart is the source
of dance and that dance is an expression of our
relationship with life and culture. A life-long
dancer, Elizabeth formally began studying and
performing Middle Eastern dance in 1996
at the age of 18. Her love for Middle Eastern dance
compelled her to seek the source in North Africa,
Eastern Europe and Turkey. In Istanbul in 2000, she
met Roman ("gypsy") men and women with whom she
studied the Turkish Roman dance form, most notably
Reyhan Tuszuz and Reyhan's daughter, Meltem. She has
recently returned from her third visit abroad wherein
she continued her study of Roman dance, and "Oriental"
or bellydance.

Elizabeth has taught and performed extensively
throughout the West Coast. Her teachers and
inspirations include Katarina Burda, Suhaila
Salimpour, Mira Betz, Rachel Brice, Suzi Tekbilek,

projects include collaberation with top Bay Area

Sooooooooooo my tribal friends and non tribal but tribal to be friends hehe.....

what's your pleasure??? do you have a particular "style" do you avoid having a particular "style" what do you like to be called, or more appropriately which category do you find least offensive to be lumped into lol.

Just wondering where we're all going with our dance style in the area.

I don't speak for my whole troupe on this, it's just me talking.

Personally I think I'm part of the tribaret line of thinking. Our costuming is a bit different, we incorporate lots of old pieces of jewelry with new ones, add some sparkle here and there and work the earthy heavy dancing end of it. I love the ats style, but I love it mixed into our own style. I'm just not sure how to categorize us so I'm thinking,,,,,,,,,,,,,,don't accept a label that's stifling or lumped. We are what we are man, just watch and enjoy lol.
